Lightweight Timber.....range of colors and textures available, suited to stilt construction, low thermal mass, this can be built in by using concrete slabs, masonry features and water tanks in walls and floor. Timber is a renewable building resource.
Straw Bale.....low thermal mass, can be heightened by the renders, good fire resistance, because straw is a waste material and is most often burned, using it for building reduces air pollution and waste. Water penetration is something to watch for.
Rammed Earth.....Thermal mass absorbs or ‘slows down’ the passage of heat through a material and then releases that heat when the surrounding environment temperature goes down, behaves as a heavyweight masonry with a high thermal mass. Blends well with site as color is determined by the surrounding earth used. Strong in compression.
Mud Brick....Thickness of the walls determines the thermal mass (300mm to be effective), use little energy in construction, has low greenhouse gas emissions if the bricks aren't fired.
